Sonible has announced that the Balancer spectral balancing plugin is available as a free download until April 13th, 2020.
Balancer was developed by Sonible, in collaboration with Focusrite. It is based on Sonible’s unique smart:engine algorithms that were also used as the backbone for the smart:comp, smart:EQ 2, and smart:EQ live plugins. Balancer uses a set of smart algorithms and A.I. learning to level out the spectral balance of a mix in a matter of seconds. It is available in VST, VST3, AU and AAX plugin formats for digital audio workstations on PC and Mac. Both 32-bit and 64-bit plugin hosts are supported.
The plugin features a streamlined user interface with a few editable parameters. The user can select the desired audio analysis algorithm based on the characteristics of the input signal. Once selected, the user should also choose one of the three available sound character options (Warm, Neutral, or Bright). Clicking the Learn button will let the Balancer collect detailed information about the audio material on the input. After that, the user can use the Intensity slider to apply the right amount of the tonal balancing curve suggested by Balancer’s A.I. technology.
Although I don’t believe that an A.I. solution applied to the master bus can substitute a proper mix performed by a skilled mixing engineer, plugins like Balancer are undeniably helpful. Such effects can be used as a quick spectral balancing tool for projects that need to be done quickly, or even as a learning aid for music producers who want to compare their mixes to professionally mixed and mastered tracks. Also, the Balancer plugin can work well as a subtle tonal balancing effect for an already well-mixed project.
Balancer can be downloaded completely free of charge from Sonible’s website until April 13th, 2020. Simply complete the free checkout process to claim your copy of the plugin. A valid email address is required to sign up and activate your Sonible account. Once you’ve completed the checkout process, the Balancer license key will be stored in your Sonible user account permanently. Just make sure to claim your free copy before April 13th.

Orchestral Tools has introduced Layers, a free orchestral sample library powered by SINE Player. The library can be used like a standard virtual instrument available in VST and AU plugin formats for compatible DAW software on PC and Mac.
Orchestral Tools Layers is an orchestral sound library designed for use with SINE player, a freeware virtual instrument plugin developed by the same company. The library features 17 GB of high-quality orchestral multi-samples. These are organized into four distinct instrument categories: Full Orchestra, Woodwinds, Brass, and Strings.
According to Orchestral Tools, the Layers virtual instrument was designed to put pristine orchestral sound at the user’s fingertips with one-touch simplicity. The included samples were recorded at the Teldex Scoring Stage in Berlin. The sounds were captured using the highest-quality recording equipment and multiple mic positions for each sampled orchestral instrument. The hired performers were all professional musicians from contemporary Berlin orchestras.
In addition to these great-sounding orchestral samples, Layers provides an intuitive user interface that is suited for beginners. There are no advanced orchestra-specific controls and parameters to worry about. Layers can be played like any basic sample-based virtual instrument without any orchestration knowledge required. While this may be a disadvantage for more experienced users, it definitely makes the instrument a great starting point for musicians who are making their first steps with orchestral scoring.
All things considered, Layers is worth downloading if you want to expand your instrument arsenal with high-quality orchestral sounds. If you already own a decent orchestral sound library, Layers is not a must-have. As for the SINE Player software, it looks promising. If Orchestral Tools keep releasing free content for SINE Player, the excellent LABS virtual instrument platform from Spitfire Audio might be getting some decent competition.
To download your free copy of Layers, visit the product page linked below and complete the checkout process. A valid email address is required. After completing the procedure, download and install the SINE Player software on your computer. After launching the SINE Player for the first time (either standalone as a plugin), enter your Orchestral Tools user account credentials. Once logged in, download the Layers sound content from the My Licenses tab in Sine Player.
